Foundation model

Language models

A foundation model is a large pre-trained model designed to serve as a base for a multitude of uses: dialogue, summarising, code, analysis. GPT, Claude, Gemini and Llama are examples. Their versatility has shifted the question: it is no longer about building a model, but about making good use of the ones that exist.
